Prateek Jain
Ph.D candidate, Computer Science and Engineering
Kno.e.sis Center, Wright State University

Bio

Prateek Jain is currently a Computer Science Ph.D student at the Kno.e.sis Center at Wright State University (WSU) which is located in Dayton, OH. He originally came to the United States in August 2006 by joining the LSDIS lab at the Computer Science Department of the University of Georgia which is located in Athens, GA. He then moved to WSU in June 2007 with his adviser Dr. Amit Sheth and now actively collaborates on various issues related to the Linked Open Data (LOD) cloud with Dr. Pascal Hitzler. Prateek primarily focuses on research related to the Semantic Web specifically in the field of querying and integration of data.

From June to September 2008, Prateek interned with Accenture Technology Labs which is located in San José, CA. He worked under Dr. Kunal Verma on the Accenture Requirements Analysis Tool. This tool enhances the clarity and quality of the software engineering requirement documents by enforcing a combination of good practices for requirements.

Prateek presented his work at the Semantic Technology Conference (San Jose, CA) in June 2009 and at the 3rd International Conference on GeoSpatial Semantics (Mexico City, Mexico) in December 2009. He also presented his work at the 9th International Semantic Web Conference (Shanghai, China) in Novemeber 2010 and the Ontology Matching Workshop 2010.

Before joining the Ph.D program, Prateek obtained a Bachelors degree in Information and Communication Technology from Dhirubhai Ambani Institute of Information and Communication Technology (DA-IICT) in May 2006. As an undergraduate student, he worked under Dr. Sanjay Chaudhary on research issues related to Web services.

Research Interests

Prateek's research interests are in the area of data management and integration, querying, and related Semantic Web technologies. He primarily works on efficient querying and integration of the Linked Open Data (LOD) cloud. He is keenly interested in modeling and representation of knowledge on the LOD cloud. His main research project is BLOOMS: Bootstrapping-based Linked Open Data Ontology Matching System. BLOOMS is an ontology alignment system based on the idea of bootstrapping information already present on the LOD cloud. It was developed particularly for Linked Open Data schema alignment.

Prateek also works on querying ontologies containing spatial information. Typically for querying these ontologies, the precise relationships between spatial entities has to be specified in the basic graph pattern of SPARQL query. This can result in long and complex queries. His work in PARQ: Partonomical Relationship Based Query Rewriting System provided a novel approach to help users intuitively write SPARQL queries to query spatial data, rather than relying on the knowledge of the ontology structure.
